GET SOME MENTORS AND THEN GET SOME MORE.

The single most important variable in life is time. There is not enough of it and we cannot get any of it back. So we must spend the time we have the most productive way possible every day, all the time, without exception. Since we are all human this is practically impossible. What is possible is to notice when you are off track so that you can get back on. With that said, I want to emphasize the critical importance of Mentors in your life and business.

Dictionary.com defines a mentor as "A wise and trusted counselor or teacher". Almost nothing can save you more time or grief than guidance from a quality mentor. Of course you have to be a willing and able student to put their guidance to work for you.

Mentors come in many different forms. They can be people, books, web sites, radio / TV programs, movies, events etc, etc, etc…the key ingredient here is you. You have to actively pursue them, pay attention to their lessons, and implement the solutions. So how do you find a great mentor?

As I just said above, the key ingredient here is you. If you are truly on a path to correct or adjust an area of your life or business, you will often need to look for answers outside yourself. Everyone usually knows someone who is excellent at something. The more people you know, the more excellence you're likely to see. You should start with these people. Once you find the person you know who appears to have excellence in an area you wish to, start asking questions.

Most great mentors are discovered. They are discovered by their students. They do not brag, they are humble, and they are concerned for the well being of others and most importantly they don't need anything from you. That is not to say that the mentor does not benefit in this situation. Mentors usually can learn a thing or two from the student as well as understand themselves better through the mentoring process.

Now that you have found a mentor, the real work begins. What you will most likely find out about your mentor is that they are a student themselves. Excellence is achieved only after a considerable commitment of time and effort. Someone who is excellent at something has done, is doing, and will continue to do their homework. They read, watch, model, learn, and implement everything they can about their area of excellence. They most assuredly have or have had mentors to help them out along the way. They will suggest steps for you to take that have gotten them where they are. You will have to work!!!

Let's go back to the problem of time mentioned in the first paragraph. I just explained how you have to work more once acquiring mentors, which equals less time available. Not necessarily. Initially you might have to implement some practices in your life which take up more time than you used before but through the wisdom of your mentors you will hopefully be avoiding the pitfalls and obstacles they faced which got them where they are now which will give you more time. Avoid mistakes of others = a lot more time available for you.

The last area I would like to address on this subject is a touchy one. What areas of my life should I get a mentor for? Every area. No matter how personal the problem, no matter how small, no matter how big, no matter how bizarre, if there is an area of your life you're not satisfied with, get a mentor and get it cleaned up. Obviously as mentioned before, finding the right person for the job is key especially when it pertains to personal matters. Since once again, you are the main ingredient here, you need to get yourself straightened out as much as possible in every area of your life. It will serve you well when hearing the needed critical observations of your mentors.

    TECH TIPS & TRICKS

What Is A Firewall, Is It Enabled & How Do I Know If It's Working?: How am I supposed to know? Nowadays when you buy a router / firewall it is almost configured out of the box to protect you. All you have to do is configure it to get on the net. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's a nightmare. Usually the accompanying poster or manual are fairly straight forward and you should be able to get it up and running in no time. You will know it's working if you can surf the net. You can also check your firewall by going to Shields UP. If all else fails, call us. After we laugh at your frustration, we'll be glad to help.

My Computer Is About 5 Years Old Should I Get A New One?: YES!!! You should have gotten a new one 2 years ago. Wait 1 more year then get 2 new ones. This is the most popular question I get asked. The truth of the matter is, it depends. It depends on what you currently can or can't do with your existing computer, and what you plan to do different if you were to get a new computer. If all you do is send an occasional email and you like your old computer then by all means hold on for dear life. If you attempt to do photo / video / audio editing, for the love of God stop and buy a new computer. Of course buy it from us. That way you will only get what you need or want and understand why.

I Can't Find Anything On The Net About My Neighborhood, Does It Exist?: My friends at Google have done it again. Hopefully all of you are using www.Google.com as your only search engine per my numerous recommendations. If not shame on you. Once you get to Google, go to the local link, put in your city and zip and save it. Now when you want to find something in your neighborhood Google Local it.

ALERTS! ALWAYS GOOD FOR A FEW LAUGHS

Viruses: Basically the best advice we can give you is to shut your computer down, unplug it and leave it that way. You may still get a virus, but you won't know so it won't matter. Here are the latest little jewels to come out as defined by Symantec.com.

Backdoor.Berbew.T is a Trojan that opens a back door to allow a remote attacker unauthorized access to the compromised computer. DON'T GET IT! "I hate compromises" - Rolando

W32.Alcra.C is a worm that spreads through file-share networks and attempts to disable several programs on the compromised computer. DON'T GET IT! "Why don't you just disable the power button so I can't turn you on in the first place?" - Rolando

W32.Bobax.AA is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself to addresses gathered from the compromised computer and from search results on www.google.com and www.accoona.com. It also operates as a covert proxy. DON'T GET IT! "No problem here, I don't have any addresses in my computer, you ate them all last week! - Rolando

Backdoor.Graybird.N is a Trojan horse that hides its presence on the compromised computer and downloads files from remote Web sites. DON'T GET IT! "All this time I thought I was downloading all that porn on my computer" - Rolando
