HOW DO I RECOVER FROM A DISASTER?

The best way to recover from a disaster is to not be taken out in the first place. Obviously. Lately with all the rainstorms and lightning many people have lost part of or all of their electronics. I'm talking a computer, printer, amplifier, DVD player, Direct TV receiver, VCR, CD player, speakers, speaker wire and this was just one guy (Randy Davis, Davis Realty). Even his surge protectors got taken out. So much for protection. If it plugged in, it was killed. According to the experts, he took a direct hit of 180,000 volts.
Randy Davis "Thank God I have insurance"!

Ross Bannister with Tampa Electric "There's really not much you can do if you take a direct hit".

Now if this happens at your house, and you don't run your business there, it's a serious inconvenience, however if it happens at your office, this can be devastating. All of a sudden a very productive, profitable month can come to a dead stop or worse yet, go into the red. Our lives are so busy that sometimes we overlook the small details that could save us the most amount of trouble.

What can you do? First off Pray! Pray it happens to your competition and not you. Secondly, make sure you have a good insurance policy with a good company that has a reputation for handling claims quickly. Mark Vernick "Another thing worth mentioning is that it is important to have complete replacement coverage". You need to get checks cut ASAP to replace your damaged equipment and to pay professionals to come in and get you back to where you were before everything blew up.

In the case of Mark Vernick, (Mark Vernick, CFP) he had good insurance with a good company who paid quickly. Only one problem remained. His office was converted to an aquarium caused by contractors removing the roof and filling the box with rain. Why? We'll never know. The point is things happen that are out of our control. Fortunately, his office complex had another office (not inhabited by fish) he could use for 6 weeks while his office was drained. 6 WEEKS!!! Are you kidding me? Mark Vernick "What a huge hassle!" Comment edited for newsletter.

Even if you don't shell out money to take preventative measures for things like losing your office, think about the possibility and discuss some propositions with people who might be involved in your rescue ahead of time. That way, if it does happen you can jump on the fix ASAP.

Here are 10 Quick Tips to get you back up in running!

    1. Think about a temporary location to run your business, talk to the owner, and work something out ahead of time.

    2. Always have another computer with the same software you use every day loaded on it and ready to go. If ever there were a great argument for owning a laptop, this is it. Pick up your office and leave.

    3. Always have an up-to-the-day backup of everything on your computer.

    4. Get a wireless air card or keep a cheap dial up account in service.

    5. Always have some emergency cash set aside in case your insurance company is stalling.

    6. Always have a loss of income provision in your insurance policy.

    7. Always pay your premium on time.

    8. Unplug everything in a lightning storm, even your surge protector.

    9. If you live in "the lightning capitol of the world" i.e. Hillsborough County, install lightning protection and then unplug everything.

    10. Pray. I mentioned it before, but it bears repeating.

For now Mark Vernick "I will surely keep up on my insurance premiums along with keeping a good back up of the computer".

And Randy Davis "I will get lightning rods installed along with low voltage protection that an electrician installs which goes next to your fuse box and protects your power, cable & phone lines".

    Rolando Pozo "I will pray".

    GETTING TO KNOW US

Montel Williams Show & Writing My First Book

As most of you are aware, I was able to catch a fugitive, my brother-in-law's killer a little over a year ago with a grassroots, web site, media campaign. The story of the capture and how I did this was covered by media all over the world.

While searching for information regarding the capture and hit-n-runs in general, I discovered the story of Sarah Landry. She was killed by two separate hit-n-run drivers and I was able to coach and assist the family in discovering who committed this crime as well after the case had gone cold for the police.

During this entire process, I received letters of support and requests for assistance from all over the world. Most people just needed some words of encouragement and others needed step by step instructions of what it takes to legally, safely, and efficiently catch someone who has brought their family harm.

Recently, I was contacted by the Montel Williams show to appear on a segment entitled "People Who take The Law Into Their Own Hands". Upon being asked how I felt about appearing on the show, I told the producer, "I would be thrilled to be a part of anything that encourages people to be part of the solution".

As with anything else in life their are no guarantees the show will ever run or that I will be on it. I decided during the phone call with the Montel Show that if people are still requesting this information so long after the captures, it is my responsibilities to do a better job at getting the information out there.

With that said, I have started writing a book on what it takes to catch a criminal. Their will be some background history of me and how I got to a place that made it possible to believe I could do this twice as well as the capture process and the mentality of people who achieve great feats in conjunction with the Classroom For Life interviews.

It is my sincere desire to help people who have lost a loved one and feel helpless because of their belief system. I look forward to completing this project and beginning the process of getting the word out. Getting on the Montel Show would be a good start.

    SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS

    Davis Realty:
As pointed out above in this month's feature article, we had some major work to do at the home of Randy Davis. His house took a major lightning strike through the fireplace chimney, traveling to the fireplace and wiping out virtually everything electronic in his house. Even the wires going to the electronics were cooked. We assisted in replacing the damaged components, re-wiring the damaged cables, evaluating electronics for repair or replacement and generating a report to file with his insurance company.

    Green Iguana Bar & Grill:
We are have been asked to create a telephone on-hold messaging campaign for Green Iguana's corporate offices, similar to what's on their web site. We are in the process of developing a script for the campaign. We will then go in the studio and create an audio and vocal track that will get attention, entertain and inform callers about Green Iguana and it's many facets.

    Caldeco Air Conditioning & Heating:
Caldeco needed a way to get their email instantly and get it anywhere. They purchased a few Blackberry 7100t's and we configured them with IMAP email. This gives them the capability to check their email anywhere and as many locations as they need to include their Blackberries.

    TECH TIPS & TRICKS

I Can't Find What I'm Looking For On The Internet. Why?: Operator error. Seriously, it used to be really hard to find information on the internet, now it's easier than ever if you follow the "KISS" rule, (Keep It Simple Stupid). For instance, if you want to find out information about me, typing Rolando Pozo in your search bar will not necessarily provide you information about me since there are several of us on the net. Since you know I am in Tampa, type rolando pozo tampa in the search bar and you'll have much better luck. The least words used, the better. Also, you should start with Google Always! That is where the term Googling came from. Google yourself, see what happens. If you don't like what you see, don't blame me.

How Do I Send A File To Someone So They Can't Change It?: You Can't. I can change anything you send me, but most people can't if you send it as a PDF. Adobe Acrobat Writer is the best way to send anyone something you don't want altered such as contracts, invoices, eviction notices, you get the picture. It's a little expensive, but well worth the money. Just remember to review what is sent back to you because there will always be people who can change things.

I Want To Get Rid Of My Phone Line, But How Will I Fax?: Fax? Who uses Fax? With all of the cell phone plans out there, it seems kinda silly to have a desktop phone unless you're connected to a phone system. Wait, it's still silly. For five dollars and change a month you can use an internet fax service in conjunction with Adobe Acrobat Writer to send and receive faxes, print only those you want, delete the rest. By all means stop faxing.

ALERTS! ALWAYS GOOD FOR A FEW LAUGHS

Viruses: Basically the best advice we can give you is to shut your computer down, unplug it and leave it that way. You may still get a virus, but you won't know so it won't matter. Here are the latest little jewels to come out as defined by Symantec.com.

W32.Bobax.AH@mm is a mass-mailing worm that attempts to use the compromised computer as a covert proxy. The worm spreads by exploiting the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (as described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039) and by sending a copy of itself to email addresses gathered.
DON'T GET IT! "What the hell is a covert proxy? Is this some kind of government conspiracy?" - Rolando

W32.Mytob.JH@mm is a mass-mailing worm the opens a back door and lowers security settings on the compromised computer.
DONT GET IT! "Here we go again with a back door. Stop with the back door." - Rolando

Trojan.Webus.I is a Trojan horse that connects to an IRC server and opens a back door on the compromised computer. DON'T GET IT! "I thought i just covered this." - Rolando

W32.Zotob.L is a worm that opens a back door and exploits various vulnerabilities. The worm spreads by exploiting vulnerabilities, including the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039).
DON'T GET IT! "I'm starting to have my doubts about Microsoft."- Rolando

W32.Reatle.I@mm is a mass-mailing worm that downloads remote files and lowers security settings. The worm spreads by exploiting vulnerabilities, and may attempt to download and execute a copy of W32.Spybot.Worm.
DON'T GET IT! "These things have a life of their own. They know how to use my computer better than I do." - Rolando

W32.Mytob.JF@mm is a mass-mailing worm that opens a back door and lowers security settings on the compromised computer. DON'T GET IT! "Have you noticed the same description for every virus? Hmmm." - Rolando
